STV funding for young carers

Tuesday 15th December 2015

The STV Children’s Appeal has just awarded £2,000 to the Angus Carers’ Centre to help improve meeting facilities and provide respite breaks for young carers in Angus.

As Angus Carers have only just moved into larger premises in Arbroath, this money is especially timely as the staff look to create a bright, relaxing, fun and inspiring space for local young carers. In addition to improving meeting facilities, the money will be used to provide much-needed respite breaks and trips for local young carers in Spring 2016.

Beth Moon, a Young Carer Support Worker with Angus Carers, said, “It is so important that the young carers feel that they have a place of their own in the new building. This funding will allow us to make the lounge a place they can look forward to coming to and relax in.”

Alison Myles, CEO of Angus Carers, said, “Many of the young carers’ families find that social isolation is a problem due to the extent of small rural communities that make up Angus as a county. For these young carers, 70% of whom have moderated to high caring roles, the opportunity to meet regularly with other young people who have similar responsibilities is so really important to them. The funding received from STV will make a massive difference to the type of activities and programmes we can provide to help to reduce this feeling of isolation for young carers, by giving them regular breaks away from their caring role.”

Held in late October each year, the 2015 STV Children’s Appeal raised an amazing £2,913,083. This money is now being distributed by STV to help children living in poverty across Scotland.

Included below are some photos of the Young Carers' lounge at our new premises, which will soon be undergoing a magical makeover thanks to the money kindly donated by the STV Children’s Appeal.
