Young Carers Residential to Dunnolly House

Tuesday 09th July 2013

Twelve young carers from throughout Angus enjoyed a residential trip to Dunolly Outdoor Centre, Aberfeldy.  The young carers took time out from their caring responsibilities to attend the 4-day, 3-night break involving lots of fun outdoor activities and challenges.  The break allowed the young carers aged from 9-11 years old to participate in activities including Archery, Gorge Walking, Nature Walks, Duckying and team building games.  As well as the organised activities run at the centre, the young people built strong friendships with the others that attended through Movie Nights, slumber parties and ‘Young Carers Got Talent’.  For many, this was their first time staying away from home which was a challenge in itself for some leaving the person they care for at home, but with the support of the other the young carers, they were able to take on the challenges and activities on offer.  The young carers felt that the break helped them to improve their team working skills, increase their confidence and self-esteem and give them the opportunity and motivation to try new things.   Hopefully this time away allowed the young carers to re-charge their batteries and to also give them the support and tools they need to help them in their day to day life.

 Young carers said:

  • “This was great and extremely fun to get to meet other young carers.  I want to do it again!”
  • “I got to meet new people and have fun”
  • “I care for my sister a lot, she always wants me.  This is my chance to get a break”
